The Self and Psychology Series
Low Mental Energy Syndrome: Procrastination, a Drained Mental Battery, and Mental Asthma
Procrastination
Action requires mental energy -> low mental energy leads to procrastination -> procrastination leads to inner conflict and self-attack, further lowering mental energy
The negative self rejects reality -> procrastination -> self-attack and inner conflict
“Procrastination Is a False Concept” “The Importance of Metacognition, Seen Through Our Attitude Toward Procrastination” “Effort Is a False Concept”
Mental Energy Running on Empty
When mental energy is low, we cannot break through bottlenecks. We get stuck, stagnate, drift in a daze, experience brain fog, and become tangled in inner conflict. We cannot rest; our mental battery is depleted, and our minds and thinking run aground.
Rest is not a formality, an assignment, a task, or self-discipline. It takes courage and strategy; it is permission, and the freedom to follow our inclinations without a task.
So, rest depends on mental energy <-> yet with low mental energy, we cannot rest or replenish that energy.
A deadlock. Like a gasoline car: when the battery is dead, the engine will not start, but without the engine running, the battery cannot recharge. We are stuck and stranded.
“Keeping Mental Energy Abundant Is the Top Priority”
Mental Energy Ebbs -> the Mind and Thinking Run Aground
Mental energy ebbs -> the mind and thinking run aground, thoughts spin in place, tunnel vision sets in, and we become anxious in advance and think too much
Mental Energy Asthma
Anxiety and despair -> excessive exertion -> depleted libido and exhausted mental energy, inner conflict fueled by fixation, greed, aversion, and delusion -> feeling unable to exert ourselves or catch our breath -> anxiety and despair.
Struggling onward, running as we gasp, gasping as we run. This also has to do with the night-watchman ego: the lower our mental energy, the more intensely it reacts to stress and generates inner conflict. A vicious cycle.
A Low State VS the Negative Self
The negative self does not allow a low state -> a low state -> the negative self
Rest
“Rest Takes Great Wisdom, Great Courage, and Great Steadiness” “Keeping Mental Energy Abundant Is the Top Priority” “Wandering Around Is the Top Priority Right Now”
Life’s only challenge is the discomfort of the present moment. Its only task is dealing with a low state. “On Living in the Present”
